Sam Majid Marks More Than One Year as Founding Chief Executive Officer of the National AI Office Malaysia

Sam Majid has reached another important milestone, marking more than one year as the founding Chief Executive Officer of the National AI Office Malaysia (NAIO). His appointment represents one of Malaysia’s most significant leadership roles in artificial intelligence, placing him at the forefront of the country’s ambition to become a globally competitive AI-driven nation.

As the founding CEO of the National AI Office Malaysia, established under the Ministry of Digital, Sam is responsible for shaping Malaysia’s national artificial intelligence ecosystem. His leadership encompasses AI policy development, governance, regulation, innovation, cross-sector collaboration, and the implementation of the National AI Action Plan 2030, which forms part of Malaysia’s 13th National Development Plan. Under his stewardship, NAIO is driving responsible AI adoption across government, industry, and society while strengthening the country’s digital economy and public services.

Before leading NAIO, Sam served as Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). During his tenure, he led numerous high-impact national digital transformation initiatives covering artificial intelligence, telecommunications, broadcasting, digital signatures, geospatial technology, parcel analytics, national addressing systems, and enterprise 5G adoption. His contributions earned both local and international recognition, including the prestigious GovInsider Digital Leader of the Year 2024 Award.

Earlier in his career, Sam simultaneously held the positions of Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at PLUS Malaysia Berhad and Chief Executive Officer of TERAS Teknologi, where he successfully led large-scale digital transformation programmes, intelligent transport systems, AI-powered mobility solutions, enterprise data platforms, customer experience innovations, and technology commercialisation. Under his leadership, both organisations received multiple industry awards while achieving significant operational and business improvements.

His leadership journey also includes serving as Head of Ecommerce at Pos Malaysia Berhad, where he established the organisation’s pioneering e-commerce business unit and introduced strategic initiatives supporting Malaysia’s rapidly expanding digital commerce ecosystem.

With more than two decades of leadership experience across artificial intelligence, digital transformation, smart infrastructure, public policy, mobility technology, and innovation management, Sam Majid has become one of Malaysia’s leading digital transformation architects. His continued leadership at the National AI Office Malaysia is expected to play a pivotal role in accelerating AI adoption, fostering innovation, strengthening national competitiveness, and positioning Malaysia among the world’s leading AI-enabled economies.
