Muhammad Syafiq bin Azhar: Building a Career Through Dedication, Adaptability and Leadership in Hospitality

From his early beginnings in hotel banquet operations to leading hospitality teams, Muhammad Syafiq bin Azhar has developed a career shaped by hands-on experience, international exposure and a commitment to professional growth.

Every successful career begins somewhere, and for Muhammad Syafiq bin Azhar, his journey in hospitality started on the banquet floor. In 2011, while pursuing his Diploma in Hotel Management, he began working part-time as a banquet staff member at Holiday Villa Hotels in Alor Setar and Subang Jaya. This early experience introduced him to hotel operations, event coordination, teamwork, and the importance of delivering memorable guest experiences.

His first international opportunity came in 2012 when he joined Aramas Hotel in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, as a Management Trainee and Duty Manager during the property’s pre-opening phase. Working in an international environment, particularly during the busy Hajj and Umrah seasons, strengthened his understanding of guest service, cultural sensitivity, and operational coordination. His responsibilities included supporting hotel preparations, developing operational procedures, inspecting rooms and assisting with staff training.

After returning to Malaysia, Syafiq continued developing his operational and management capabilities through positions at StarCity Hotel, Fuller Hotel and Grand Alora Hotel. He later broadened his professional perspective by joining Tourism Malaysia as a Tourism Officer in 2014. During this period, he gained exposure to tourism promotions, exhibitions, roadshows, marketing campaigns and stakeholder engagement. This experience helped him understand the wider tourism industry and its relationship with hospitality businesses.

Between 2017 and 2021, he returned to hotel operations and worked across several properties, including Hotel Seri Malaysia Marang, Royal Widad Residence at UTM Kuala Lumpur, AnCasa Hotel Kuala Lumpur and De Palma Resort Kuala Selangor. These roles exposed him to different hotel environments, pre-opening operations, internal audits, guest relations and departmental management. His progression to Room Division Manager further expanded his responsibilities across front office, housekeeping, finance operations, and operational performance.

A significant transition followed in 2022 when Syafiq took on the position of Chief Operating Officer at Federasi Koperasi Pelancongan, Penjagaan Diri & Kesihatan Malaysia Berhad. This appointment expanded his experience beyond individual hotel operations into organizational leadership, strategic planning, budgeting, digital transformation and stakeholder management. He subsequently returned to hotel leadership, serving as Deputy Hotel Manager at Dē MOCCIS Boutique Hotel and Service Manager at Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur, part of the Shangri-La Group.

In September 2025, Syafiq joined iBilik as Cluster General Manager, taking responsibility for hotel operations across properties under the Kingston Hotels and Swing & Pillows brands. His work focuses on operational efficiency, guest experience, team leadership, occupancy and revenue performance, maintenance, and cost control. His approach brings together the operational knowledge and leadership experience developed throughout his career.

His professional development has also remained an important part of his journey. In 2024, he obtained the Certified Hospitality Manager (CHM) qualification from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute and a Certified Halal Executive qualification through JAKIM. He also serves as a Panel Pemeriksa Penggredan Premis Penginapan Pelancongan under Malaysia’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture. His achievements have been recognised through awards including Best Hotel Manager Award 2025, Top Sales Achiever Hospitality of 2025 and Most Improved Branch Award 2025.

Reflecting on his career, Syafiq’s journey highlights the value of starting with practical experience, remaining adaptable and continuously developing professional capabilities. From hotel operations and tourism development to corporate leadership and his current responsibilities at iBilik, each stage has contributed to his understanding of the hospitality industry.

As he continues moving forward, his focus remains on strengthening hospitality organisations, developing future leaders and supporting service excellence. His story is a reminder that professional growth is built through consistent effort, learning and the willingness to take on new challenges.

Kepimpinan Malaysia celebrates Muhammad Syafiq bin Azhar’s professional journey and wishes him continued success in his leadership career.
