Syed Nizamuddin Khassim has entered a new chapter in his professional journey as Corporate Relations Advisor (East Malaysia) at Shell, bringing together extensive experience in corporate relations, government affairs, diplomacy, stakeholder engagement, and the energy sector.
Based in Sarawak, Syed Nizamuddin plays a corporate relations role supporting Shell’s operations and investments in East Malaysia. His responsibilities include corporate relations for Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (SMDS) in Bintulu, Shell’s pioneering gas-to-liquids facility, as well as the Rosmari–Marjoram (R&M) Onshore Gas Plant, which forms part of a major sour gas development. Through engagement with government agencies, institutions, and other stakeholders, he contributes to maintaining constructive relationships and supporting operational continuity and project delivery.
Before joining Shell Malaysia, Syed Nizamuddin served as a Manager at Sarawak Energy, where he focused on government and institutional stakeholder management. His work involved analysing stakeholder environments and providing insights to support business engagement and strategic decision-making.
Another significant chapter of his career was his more than decade-long service with the Government of Malaysia as an Administrative and Diplomatic Officer. During this period, he developed substantial experience in diplomacy, international cooperation, policy analysis, public administration, and government representation.
His diplomatic career also included an overseas posting at the Malaysian Embassy in Paris, where his responsibilities involved matters connected with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). His experience in bilateral and multilateral engagement provided him with exposure to complex international policy and institutional environments.
Alongside his professional experience, Syed Nizamuddin has built a strong academic foundation. He holds a Master of Studies (MSt) in Diplomatic Studies from the University of Oxford, supported by the Yayasan Khazanah–Oxford Centre of Islamic Studies scholarship, as well as a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Malaya.
His transition from public service and diplomacy into corporate stakeholder management reflects a career built around understanding institutions, navigating complex stakeholder environments, and developing constructive relationships.
In his new role at Shell, Syed Nizamuddin brings together policy insight, diplomatic experience, stakeholder intelligence, and knowledge of the energy sector. His diverse professional background positions him to contribute to meaningful engagement between business, government, and communities while supporting Shell’s continued activities and investments in Sarawak and East Malaysia.
