Beyond Manufacturing: Junaidi Ismail’s Journey into Malaysia’s Data Centre Industry

Junaidi Ismail: Strengthening People and Organisational Growth at DayOne

In an evolving business landscape where people remain central to organisational success, Junaidi Ismail has built a distinguished Human Resources career focused on workforce development, employee engagement, and strategic business partnership. With more than 15 years of experience across manufacturing, financial services, and the data centre industry, he brings a comprehensive understanding of HR leadership and organisational development.

Junaidi’s professional journey reflects his ability to adapt to changing industries while maintaining a strong commitment to people management. After spending much of his career in manufacturing, he embraced a significant new challenge in November 2023 by transitioning into Malaysia’s rapidly developing data centre sector. Joining DayOne, he entered an industry where effective workforce planning, operational excellence, and organisational capability are essential to supporting business expansion.

His extensive manufacturing experience provided a strong foundation in employee and industrial relations, workforce management, foreign workforce and immigration matters, ethical recruitment, regulatory compliance, and employee welfare. Through these responsibilities, Junaidi developed a practical understanding of balancing employee needs with business objectives while maintaining constructive relationships with government agencies and other stakeholders.

At DayOne, Junaidi became part of the pioneering Human Resources team, contributing to the establishment and expansion of the HR function during a period of remarkable organisational growth. The workforce grew from approximately 50 employees to 1,000, creating new demands for structured HR policies, effective governance frameworks, streamlined processes, and scalable people-management systems. His contribution has supported the development of HR foundations needed to accommodate this expansion.

His responsibilities cover a broad range of strategic and operational functions, including HR business partnering, workforce planning, organisational development, compensation and benefits, expatriate management, payroll, and HR operations. Working alongside teams across data centre operations, construction, engineering, and corporate functions, he helps align people strategies with operational requirements and the organisation’s wider business goals.

For Junaidi, entering a new industry has also been an opportunity for professional growth. His transition from manufacturing to data centres reinforced the importance of adaptability, continuous learning, and openness to new challenges. While each industry presents different technologies, operational demands, and workforce priorities, he believes that strong HR fundamentals remain valuable across business environments.

Reflecting on his leadership journey, Junaidi shares, “Industries may change and technology will continue to evolve, but people will always remain at the heart of every successful organization. My journey from manufacturing to data centers has taught me to keep learning, stay adaptable and never lose sight of the people behind the business.”

Junaidi Ismail’s journey demonstrates how experienced HR professionals can contribute to organisational transformation by combining established expertise with a willingness to embrace change. As Malaysia’s data centre industry continues to develop, his people-focused approach and broad HR experience position him to contribute meaningfully to workforce development, operational effectiveness, and sustainable organisational growth at DayOne.
